A forty-something single dad, a twenty-something hockey star, and a whole lot of baggage. No, this couldn’t possibly blow up in their faces.

Officer Geoff Logan has his plate full. His cop’s salary and Marine retirement aren’t enough to make ends meet. He’s got war wounds and demons that are in it for the long haul. His teenagers are, well, teenagers, plus they’re pissed that he left the boyfriend they loved. Can’t a guy catch a break?

Seattle Steelheads center Asher Crowe has it all. A seven figure salary. A literal house on a hill. A stable, loving relationship with an amazing boyfriend. At least, that’s what the world sees. Behind closed doors, he’s been living in a private hell, and when he finally works up the courage to end things, his boyfriend refuses to go quietly.

One call to the cops, and suddenly Geoff and Asher’s paths cross. But is the connection between them simple chemistry? Kindred spirits? Or just a pair of lonely hearts looking for a hot distraction?

And even if it’s more than physical, is there really a future for two men from such vastly different worlds? Especially when the past comes knocking?

This novel is approximately 89,000 words long.

"DNF. So slow that I lost interest at 13%. Too much internal dialogue. Also, I dont have patience for continuity problems, especially with an author as experienced as Witt. “Geoff was the first attractive man I’d laid eyes on in the wake of my split.” He and his boyfriend had split THAT NIGHT. I expect better than that from Witt."

  • I have an up and down relationship with L.A. Witt’s books, but this one was definitely an up!

Asher Crowe and Geoff Logan are both just getting out of abusive relationships, although of different types, as this book begins. In fact, the two meet when Geoff responds to the domestic disturbance call that results when Asher breaks up with his awful ex. The two grow closer as Geoff helps support Asher’s untangling from the relationship, so there’s a hefty dose of emotional hurt/comfort in this—exactly my jam. Geoff is 44, a working class cop with two teenage kids he has partial custody of, while Asher is 26, and a millionaire hockey star, so power dynamics around money and age definitely play a role in their relationship, but the primary concern is absolutely how gunshy they both are from previous relationships.

Geoff has a great family and support system—his ex-wife, kids, and police partner are all refreshingly written—but Asher is a lot more isolated. There’s not a ton of descriptions of hockey or his team in this hockey romance, so if that’s what you’re especially into this may be a bit of a disappointment for you. Asher’s team does show up for him when he needs them to, but not in the “sequel bait” way you often see with hockey series, where time is spent sketching out their separate characters and establishing their issues.

Mostly, this is a relationship book built around two extremely likable MC, with a great dynamic and great chemistry. The writing was solid, the pacing good, with enough space given to developing all of the things I wanted developed. Overall a great read! 4.5 stars.

  • I read this romance in one happy sitting. While Ashe is a hockey player and the sport and fame are vital to this story, the really plot is about two heroes recovering from abusive relationships. Geoff, older and a father of teenagers is so lovely and Ashe, our ginger hero is just as kind. They both hurt. I really love how human they are and how complex their lives are. The dating is nice. My favorite besides the healing love and self acceptance and compassion is all the subtle work with with power dynamics. Geoff is older. Ashe has more money. Then, there is honoring each others as equals and the deep respect which carried over to the bedroom.A lovely romance.
  • The first half of this novel is edited better than the second half, which means I skimmed through the second half, which irritates me no end since it means I was LIED to for a sale.

Plus, had the editing been better, I could've given this five stars, despite the whole 'why don't you two just TALK TO EACH OTHER' issue (too common throughout the genre). What they saved in time/editor cost, I resent and say so here. Any review adds to rating, but for those who read reviews (hi) I hope this helps you decide on this book for yourself.

Plot, a little slow, a lot sweet, a fair amount 'argh, TALK' and a lot creepy via each abusive ex. Surprisingly good epilogue, considering it's in the second half. Characters were good, all of them.

If only the boring and repetitive bits, dialogue and thoughts, had gotten the editing they needed, particularly the conversation filler phrases like "What do you mean?" - as if he can't offer a counter-thought. Or like, follow the thread, or whatever. It's lazy writing, is what I'm saying. Or lazy editing, an issue I have with this writer in particular. Every time I fall for another of her novels, I end up grousing about the clunky prose. Oh well. Maybe I can make this one my line in the sand, since it was good despite having to skim.
  • I'm not typically into the sports books bc they just mostly all seem the same, but bc I LOVE LA Witt's books and her humor I pre-ordered and was not disappointed. This is a sweet book about a hot older cop/retired Marine and a 20 something hockey player who batter their own mental relationship demons from previous relationships. I like how the anxiety in the story wasn't sugar-coated or just glossed over, it was actually a really big focus in the book which made me happy as somebody who battles anxiety on a daily basis not to see a MC just say "it's okay" and everything was okay, but to actually have both MCs understand what the other one has been through and address it. I'll be looking forward to the next hockey book Witt is totally "not" writing.
  • What I liked I found the two main characters (Geoff and Asher) to be likable and believable in their actions and in their dialog. It was refreshing reading a story with an older character, rather than lots of 20-somethings. I thought the story progressed nicely and was interesting.
What I didn't like The characters' involvement with each other progressed too quickly. They both had just come out of bad relationships and were getting deeply involved with each other very quickly. After only weeks of dating, the "L" word was used. Maturity and experience should have had them both holding back on moving so fast. I also found Geoff's dating Asher seemed professionally inappropriate.
Overall I really liked this book and would definitely recommend it!
  • This is the introduction to a absolutely INCREDIBLE new series. What a touching, beautiful, heartbreaking at times story. I usually don't read hockey books. I'm glad I bought this one. Asher and Geoff were two messed up guys. Both coming out of abusive relationships. Both were wrecked. But THIS is a book about the strength and what it takes to pull yourself out of a situation like that. This story was so magnificently written with compassion, understanding and true heart. It's filled with supporting characters that are as well written as the main characters. This is a book that you can't put down. It also has a FANTASTIC EPILOGUE. I'm looking forward to SEATTLE STEELHEADS Book #2. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!!
